I often have to burn edges as a prep work for the artist Huguette Caland. I wear a mask, a goggle, and use a small torch or alcohol lamp. Although I don't like the smell of smoke, I do find the end result satisfying.

I was always suspicious of warcraft when I hear guys talk about it with so much passion. But before I know it, I'm talking the same hearty wow talk and getting the "omg, you are a warcraft addict too?!" frown from friends. Warcraft after all, is like any other blockbuster movie or taco truck - it's part of the culture and I just have to give it a try. 2 months of playing isn't so bad, i had my fun :)

I've been working as her assistant for over 2 years now. I prepare grounds, do washes, and little things here and there. What I love about her is her personality (and of course her work :)). She is a successful artist yet she still carries great honesty to her work and life. I spent almost all August through early September editing videos. The first and last stages of editing are basically to watch/listen to the footage over and over and over again, and after the actual work is done, there's the waiting for render/export (I want a mac pro). So, I did a lot of sketches, mostly of my dog, while I waited.

I just came back from a 2 week road trip from LA to Vancouver BC. I had 3 days to submit a work to a group show "Dream to Reality" at Nucleus. I never like to put in old work so I just look as all the pictures I took driving down freeway 5 and painted them. The scenes all seemed so different but similar. Its always the same perspective, grass, trees, birds, phone poles, dirt. But how they are organized can create different look.

It's harder then I thought to fight off this internal voice that wants to justify whatever that I'm painting. I admitted to John couple days ago that it was David Hockney's paintings of his dogs that made me feel comfortable about painting my dog. There is always this thought that "a painting needs an idea! a painting should be more than formal concerns," because 99 percent of the articles about paintings are all talking about ideas so it must be wrong to paint without one. As specialized as a profession can be, within that social circle, there's still old ideas and old rules that people follow without knowing why.

these three paintings are close to be done. 'storage' I'm not sure what to title this... this painting is about a couple looking for a make-a-wish tree. it's a very common thing for asian people to go to palm readers or psychics and let them decide the future of one's marriage, business, family fortune, what ever. I have a cousin changed his name recently just because his family believe changing name can help him find a right partner. what a joke. tractor is almost done too...

First time putting a show together

It's an on going thing between Claremont City Hall and the CGU art program. Each semester two students from CGU pick a theme and organize a show that exhibit in the city hall office. This semester is finally my turn and I get to work with Yoshi to put together a small show called "Pieces." I'm so glad two semesters ago I asked Anne if I could volunteer for this. I get really excited looking at other students work and when I see something really great I have this urge to really want other people to see them, kind of like sharing good chow places I guess. Hopefully I'll get to do more of curating in the future...perhaps in other better spaces :) The works at entrance area are Anne Hieronymus and Delmy Kennedy Anne's letter form landscape ( the picture over exposed on the top right corner..the lighting in this place is not too great) Delmy's painting going down the hall way on the right hand side is Karen Chu's work, Joshua Dildine, and Vicki Tao at the end of it. Karen's wall upclose of her works Joshua's drawings upclose Vicki's new painting oh btw, Vicki...the frame you build is not square....just to let you know this is a nice piece...maybe you should...hmm. :) around the corner of Karen's wall, is another Anne's piece. It looks kind of lonely, but it gets all the attention (*cough, if there's another one of the similar piece...) Anne's piece up close, very delicate paper cut out passing Anne's piece is another wall with more Vicki's painting and Joshua's drawings (Hi Yoshi..) Vicki's crazy collage Joshua's drawing... Yoshi and I love them so much... upclose shots.. from another angle More Delmy's collages on the other wall and back to the entrance.

1st solder project

My first solder project, the minty boost! It's a portable usb power that can charge many things such even my iphone 3g. The minty boost is designed by http://ladyada.net/make/index.html This is what the minty boost looks like. My first try is not so smooth. I was too nervous, because I didn't want to mess anything up and I wasn't paying enough attention to what I was doing. So I soldered the IC socket and the schottky diode the wrong way. My solder pencil was too close to the circuit and melted the surface alittle bit.. I have no idea if that caused any additional damage. When I thought finally it's ready for a test run, the board started to smell burnt and I realized I forgot to put in the last piece, converter chip, before putting in the battery. I started to panic and tried to stick the chip in, and the chip immediately got really hot - I forgot to take out the batteries and the current was literally going through my fingers...

The second try was like a breeze, everything was soldered and tested working in under 30 min. I'm absolutely impressed with the creator coming up with this cool idea.

My summer has been good so far -moved to chino hills -learning electronics -learning piano -played with, ran, walked Tofu lots -watched tons of movie/tv shows -found good chow places around Chino Hills, -gamed alot - mgs 4 (absolutely loved) gta, grand tourismo, and getting better with sim racing -caught up with new comics... i don't think i can ever stop reading japanese comic.. -helped mom clean up her house. and finally, starting august, i'm back to studio and paint almost everyday.

Tofu pecks

Tofu pecks a lot. Sometimes she'll swallow the rocks she pick off the road, sometimes she'll just keep it in her mouth, moving it back and forth. It's like the sound of eating a hard candy. But eating rocks is no good...this is the second time she has bad, watery poops, and we think its the rocks....what else can it be...just look at the size of the rocks coming out with her watery poop....

I'm just starting to learn some basic electronics and programming. Parallax's basic stamp kit is a pretty good beginner's kit.. definitely more understandable and user friendly then the electronic for dummies book. It's very different from painting, everything has its right place, even where to put a comma is important. The first two thing i want to make is my own lure coursing system for my doggie.. and an art project that i've had in mind for a while, but very difficult to do according to programming friend of mine. Hopefully i'll be able to make something by the end of summer! speaking of doggie...... she just loves tissues and papers, plastic bags and everything that's light, and white... but she's actually very gentle with her own toys, strangely enough.

sometimes i wish i could just let her off leash in the wild...

This picture is the winner for What Makes Us Human Photo Contest, under the category "the dark side." It's taken from a trip to Taiwan last year. Me and my dad visited a village that is over 150 yr old, but the city decided to tear it down and rebuild it to something else. We went there and took some pictures. This is my favorite picture of all the ones from that place and I'm glad people like it too. The one below are some other pictures I took from the village.

maker faire

Steve and I drove up to San Francisco to see the Maker Faire over the weekend. It wasn't all that i was expecting, unlike the make magazine, the faire has some great stuff, but over all an unorganized mess.

Sunday, on the way there, we're stuck on the freeway for 1 hour just for .8 miles to exit. I heard on saturday there were over 60,000 people jamming into the faire, I can't imagine.

after getting there, the line for the ticket was another 30 min. Steve was using my little nephew to take pictures of other people in the line.

The two sides of her personality. One is what everyone sees and what everyone thinks is the only side. The beautiful, calm, affectionate, happy, hugging....etc... The other side is the more challenging side. She growls or barks to express her frustration, especially after people talking to her in high-iii pitched voice and making her jump and make her excited or after we run with her. So, problem (growling, bouncing, chewing leash, barking) only shows up when her excitement level is too high. Steve and I never had a large dog and we're not expecting that, we were sort of naively expecting a well behaving puppy. It is especially frustrating for us when we walk her on the streets with people playing with her, making her jump, without asking us or acknowledging us that they wanted to touch the dog. And she likes to get a taste of everything that's on the floor...she 'pecks.' she doesn't like people hover over her for sure...i wonder if its a large dog thing... It's definitely a challenge to own and big dog and to teach it right. Tofu's tantrum 1 : on the grass, she assumes grass as free range playground. she bounce, chews the leash, at this point if we don't pull her back to the concrete sidewalk, she'll accelerate to growling and even barking. tantrum 2 : toys in her mouth, she'll growl if we try to take it directly from her mouth. But she learned to "drop it" and that bad behavior is slowing going away. Other than that, she really is a very smart dog, She already learned to sit, stay, down and drop it and she is only 12 weeks old!

Kitty Litter House

Its really hard to find a right place for cat's litter box, because no matter where, it'll stink and the sand will get all over the area. so I had an idea of making a box for the litter box to contain the sand, and with the corner windows, to allow more air to travel through the box. This wood working project was set out to be finished in 2 weeks...but ended up completely occupied the entire May and early June due to my lack of experience. Anywho, it was fun.
